History

Huntington Bancshares Incorporated was founded in 1806 by the founder P.W Huntington. Mr P.W Huntington named his bank P.W Huntington & Company. The original operating address of the company was on the northwest corner of the High & Broad Streets.

Expansion

Huntington built its first five story building in 1878 on the southwest corner of the intersection. After P.W Huntington, four out of his five sons would become partners to take the company to new heights. This partnership started in the time between 1890s and the early 1900s.

The bank was incorporated in the year 1905 and was named “The Huntington National Bank Of Columbus”

After completely turning over the bank to this sons, Mr P.W Huntington passed away in the year 1918.

The next era of leadership was under Francis Huntington, he became president and provided his leadership skills for 14 years.

Trust Powers

In the year 1915 Huntington Bank received limited trust powers and in another 7 years the Huntington Bank had received complete trust powers by the Federal Reserve System.

Purchases Of Property

In the year 1923 Huntington Bank purchases a Columbus-based State Savings Bank & Trust Company and purchased alongside it,  the Hayden-CLiton National Bank Of Columbus.

In 1958 Huntington Bank purchased another Columbus based company, this time it being the Market Exchange Bank Company.

In 1962, Huntington acquired both First National Bank Of Grove City & People’s Bank Of Canal Winchester.

In these years the bank spent its capital investing into these banks and outright purchasing them as to expand from their few offices to the many offices it has. These purchases all played a role in making Huntington Bancshares Inc. one of the largest banks of the USA. The later half of the 1900s was spent purchasing a large number of properties and other financial institutions. Some notable purchases are mentioned below.

In the year 1967 the Huntington Bank purchased another financial institution, this time it was the Washington Courthouse based Washington Savings Bank.  In 1969 Huntington Bank acquired the Ashland based Farmers Bank. In 1970 another purchase was made this time for the Bowling-Green based Bank of Wood County, The Toledo based Lucas County State Bank. In 1971 Huntington bank acquired the Lagonda National Bank & Trust Company Of Lima and Portage National Bank

The next purchase after this one was made in the year 1972 where Huntington Bank acquired The First National Bank Of Wadsworth and the National Bank Of Kenton. In this time, the first fully automatic bank system was established that was operational for 24 hours.

In 1980, Farmers & Merchants Bank, Milford Center and the First National Bank of Burton all merged together with Huntington Banshares

Notable Changes

In the year 1975 the Huntington Bancshares Incorporated changed their logo to the current “Honeycomb” Logo.

Reorganization

In the year 1966, the P.W Huntington & Company reorganized into a holding company, being renamed to Huntington Bancshares Incorporated
